So true story, my shop guys threw out my K member with steering sector and A frames, where a scrapper took it, from my 70 charger manuel steering. So I went to a junk yard and pulled the K frame, power steering sector(I want power anyway) from a 69 small block charger. The splines are not the same on the sector as the column, and I think I will find the steering column shaft is too long. What is my best remedy

The manual steering column will be longer than a power steering column. The pitman arm is different, like you mentioned. Also, the 69 k-frame will work on your '70 but if you plan on running a factory sway bar, you will also need the lower control arms and the sway bar (and components) from the '69 too.  They are different than your '70 parts. If you wanted to use your ' 70 sway bar, you would have to modify the k-frame quite a bit.

Either a complete PS column or replace the manual shaft with a PS shaft.

So, what would be wrong with cutting the column shaft down, and installing a steering u joint that welds to the column shaft and has the proper spline to the steering sector. Smaller joint, more header clearance, but no play longitudinally like the original, except for what the collapsible column shaft allows.

I forget the name but they make  replacement  U joint steering shafts for trucks and cars..

flaming river makes the coupler and no nothing wrong only people who don't like modifications to old school would have a problem with it.

I want to do this mod myself....you wont have any dead lag at center no more so they say.

I PMed some members on here who did it and they loved it......great response.

Did it last Saturday with a U joint from Speedway. Listed as 3/4 shaft with .625 mopar spline. About $50 with shipping. Cut down steering column shaft, centered steering box and steering wheel fit and marked u joint, pulled column and welded on joint, and put back together. Seems to have eliminated some play and much smaller joint that should help with header clearance. Downside looks like will have to remove column mounting bolts and slide column back to remove steering box.

I just disconnected my steering column from the gear box what a PIA! to get that little round piece to slide out! I had to bang it so much to get it to pop out, I wonder if I damanged something? You have to weld on a U joint? Uh id like to get rid of this poor design and go with a u joint!
