Hi,

my 73 has a 318 with a 904, 8 1/4. I get a vibration from 35 to 45 and a small klunk sound when I start accelerating when coasting. I discovered my front u joint is a little loose and the transmission yoke itself has a little movement to it. Is that normal, or do I need to replace an output shaft bearing or something?

I plan on doing both u joints anyway because they have almost 140,000 on 'em. Let me know what you think about the loose yoke.

Also, if the ring and pinion are worn can I get stock replacements at a reasonable price, or at all if it has 2.71's or so?

Thanks for the help, as always.

I would say definitely bad u-joints at that mileage.

The yoke in the trans is designed with a lot of clearance to the bushing in the tailshaft.

Check out sites like Randy's Ring and Pinion for gear availability.

Hello, I was reading this tread and i am having a similar issue with my 69 Charger. I just installed a 440ci engine i built (my first real build very proud to say) and i have a wavering vibration in the drive train above 60 mph.
.....     .....     .....     .....     .....     .....     ......
the dots represent the vibration!
When i put the motor in i changed the flex plate as the balance from a 383 to a 440 was different. So i have had the drive shaft rear yoke and u-joint replaced an balanced, i have replaced the transmission mount. I had this issue once before and i changed tranny mount and it went away. Once it went away i found my wheel bearings were bad to i pulled the rear end apart, replace wheel bearings, adjusted back lash, and made sure axle end play was right. It drove super smooth after all this was done then i took he on the high way and found that vibration. I have a speedometer app on my iPhone as my speedo is slightly off. I  have not beat my car as i was putting the 500 mile break in on the new motor. I raced up the car and checked drive shaft and there is a significant amour of play at the slip yoke and tails haft of the A727 transmission. Could this play be the culprit? I am wondering if the tailpipe bushing and bearings could be bad and need replacing? On the differential yoke there is slight up and don movement but not side to side which i thought was strange but with this car nothing surprises me anymore.
if there is anyone out there that has had the same issue and can please shed some light on the subject please email me at

like i said it only happens above 60 mile per hour...i took it up to 70 and it does increase a little with speed, but as soon as i slow down upper 60 it goes away. Please don't be dumb and tell me not to go over 60...lol
Thank you guys! Happy veterans day to all my fellow veterans out there!!
