Metallic Popping Noise Cause?

Okay guys....before I crawl under and chase a bunch of deadends....maybe you can help out.

When in reverse, with the brake lightly applied, and going over a slight bump (like when backing out of the driveway and into the street).......the front right side makes a popping or cracking sound. 

It happens mostly after the car has been sitting for a few days.  Always in reverse and when the brake is applied.

The only thing that comes to mind is maybe something with the brake adjusters for the rear drums?  But it really seems to be tied to the suspension, and up front.

What do you think?

I would check the brakes first, ball joints, tie rod ends, on that front right side after.  Wish I had a better answer for you.  So it never happens in drive over a bump?

Front strut rod bushing can get worn inside and tap metal to metal, it happened to me. I didn't find that till I was rebuilding my front end.

 when your rolling back wards , if you jab on the brake a few times  , can you feel any thing through the steering wheel in time with the noise it makes  , if you know what I mean  ,  ( sounds crazy trying to explain  this  )

Me too, replaced them noise was gone.

Paid more attention to the noise today......happens when I go forward as well, and not just over bumps. 

But it does it when pushing on the brakes, but only a couple times.  Like when I pump the brakes, it clicks the first couple pumps, then quiet on pumps after that.


All the wear components on the car are new.


I'll have to get it off the ground and start checking torque on everything.

Mine did something similar a long time ago and when I pulled the drum the adjuster was bent out of shape. Straightened it and all was well.  Not to say this is the issue with your car, but it's an easy thing to check and fix if needed.

I'll probably check that first.  Some guys have mentioned on here that some noises sound like the front, when really it's out back.

Hmm, just thought of something....Dino, you got drums up front?  Mine are disks.

Yes mine are drums.  True, the origin of the noise can be misleading so try recreating it with the window or door open or have someone stand next to the car when you drive slowly.  I wonder if the bearing is damaged.

had this problem years ago on an aussie  gm car ,don't remember the exact problem but the calliper piston was going back into calliper a ways on one side  and leaving a "gap" between pad and disc especially after sitting for a while  .when you first put brakes on got the slap of the pad being pushed out  onto disc ,made a loud metallic pop /crack/clang  noise     a brake job fixed the problem

I does seem to do it more when first starting out after the car has been sitting a few days.   Not at all or rarely after driven around a while.   


I'll pay attention more to see if I can create the sound with the car motionless.
