Is the firewall different for an A/C car?

70 charger is the subject- thx

hawkeye

There is a difference between ac and non ac firewalls.

crj1968

ugh- that is what I thought.  :-\

thanks for the info !

Indygenerallee

more holes on tha A/C version. I have a complete firewall from a NON A/C 69 for sale if anyone is interested. clean too.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

crj1968

More holes or additional holes? Know what I mean?  Will a non A/C box fit where an A/C box was?

I had an entire A/C box and sold it on here because I was going to put in a non a/c box. Then it hit me that may have been a big mistake.  DOH !!!!

hawkeye

A non ac box will fit but you will have big holes that will need to be covered.  Plus the dash and controls are different.

crj1968

Thanks Hawkeye. Much appreciated

I think I could use my existing controller just to control the heat side and and the fan speed.

Dino

So it's an A/C car but you don't want A/C?  Stick an A/C box in there and don't hook up A/C.  Everything will fit and you can add A/C if and when you want to.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Yes- hopefully I can buy one for what I sold my perfectly good one for.   :brickwall:

I cant recall for sure but I think the hole pattern is different for both heather cores. I dont think a non AC heater core will fit to a AC firewall without hacking it up.
If you want a non ac car then change the part of the firewall out for a non ac piece. Dont need to replace the full piece, you can just replace the upper left part of the firewall. afterwards no one sees the difference and i will look as the car came without ac.
I did mine that way

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Thanks yeah after looking at some engine compartment shots, I realized what a dumb initial question it was...for some reason I thought both designs had the blower motor sticking through the wall.

Thanks for the pics!

been looking for pictures side by side comparison so to speak for a long time  , thinking about  putting a standard heater box set up in mine & removing A/C firewall & heater box , or just make blanking plates for the AC holes  :shruggy: , undecided  , jury still out !!

, should of done this at the time of the resto , but I just wanted to hurry up & get the damn thing done by the time I came to the engine bay  ( started at the back  :P )

I know what you mean.

I played with the idea of patching all the AC holes and redrill the right non-ace holes again. In my case it would certainly have been cheaper since no used parts are available overseas. So I had to buy a nos piece from a member here witch did cost me as much on ipmort tax fees as the part itself.
but boy am I glad I did it this way, The panels line up easy, so it just a matter of cut and paste, grind the welded seam and smooth it out with a light coat of filler.

Saved tons of time there and otherwise I would never been happy with the result.

I converted my 68 Charger from A/C to non A/C. The mounting bolts are different. If you look very closely there are dimples on the firewall that show you where to drill the new holes. I actually had to sand the paint off to find them.
The A/C unit is very heavy and is operated by vacuum. The non A/C is cable operated which is why you need a different set of controls on the dash.
Another issue you will need to address is the wiring harness. Big difference between the units. I actually had my entire dash harness out of my car while restoring it. Instaed of buying a repop harness for the dash I went threw and traced/checked each wire, repairing what was needed. There were several connector plugs that you don't use for the non A/C unit. I also had to re-wire one of the plug connectors. The FSM is your best friend during this process.
