When is the last time you used your computer to.....

  Compute something? I used my mighty Toshiba to crunch the numbers for my son moving out. He wants to move into a house with his good buddy so I used it's calculator. It dawned on me it's the only time I used this thing to actually compute anything!    I could have used a 99 cent calculator to do the same thing but it got me wondering if the term is so outdated some other word is more appropriate nowadays?
  My Dad was an electrical engineer and had his own (rented, you could not "buy" in 69.) IBM computer back in 1969. He figured out how to make a program to produce the Mylar tapes that automated machines used to manufacture parts. It use to be a very labor intensive process and he could pump one out in days instead of weeks. He commented to me "One day everyone will have computers" back then and by 1989 when he past it was happening.

If you want to get all technical and stuff, computer programs are constantly "computing" to do your bidding.

Well, part of my job is data analysis so I pretty much use my computer (ok, not always mine, usually a big server) to compute stuff all day long.

Every day I use a computer to do calculations, usually involving quantum mechanical functions (the mathematics of matter and energy)....

I used to do project management and budgets.  I used very complex spreadsheets to calculate and track project costs.  For big problems that you need to track, you probably can't beat a computer.  For a single simple calculation a pencil and paper or a hand held calculator are probably just as efficient.
