What do you think about changing the carter avs 4bbl into this on my engine?
Original 383. 70' delivered with 2bbl.

Stay with the carter or go for this holley?
Only reason i think about it is to make it easier to tune and maybe pick up a few horses :yesnod:

If the engine is mostly stock I'd leave the AVS on there.

The holley would probably give you the extra horses, but doubt it would be easier to tune.  The Carter AVS was rediculously easy to tune.  The performer carbs look very similar to the stock AVS and are tuned the same, I like my performer carb, but I hear people here saying different.   I just know the holley didn't look right, and didn't like the looks of one on mine when I put them on, had a holley 600 once, and an 800 double pumper at one time, eventually put the carter avs back on. 20 years later put the performer on since the avs looked a bit rough after a long storage.

What lord warlock has said, AVS rediculously easy to tune,
that holley would be a better carb, but you need to know what your doing, easy way is one step at a time and write it down , easy to reverse what you have done wrong other than make a complete mess of it

So the avs is easy to tune? Some say it can be hard to tune..

I like the look of originality so i probably keep the avs.

Thanks

The Carter carbs have a lot of naysayers but for a stock street driven car its largely a set and forget carb.  Its far easier to tune because it has fewer variables than the Holley, which is a large part of why the Holley can make more power.

Lord Warlock

With only two screws to mess with for tuning on the avs, it really takes no time to set up and adjust.  If i remember right, tighten both clockwise till stops, then loosen 1.5 to 2.0 turns counterclockwise, once it starts adjust a little more to your liking.   If it bogs in turns check the floats, also easy to remove and replace if needed.  One of mine developed a pinhole once and had gas inside the float.

Also, in my case, the two holleys I had needed to use a spacer plate to bolt to the stock intake as the bolt patterns didn't match, likely because I got them used from friends and could have been designed for chevy's or Fords.  The AVS and Performer bolt right up.  My only complaint with the AVS is that while it performs decently at 625cfm it seemed to starve the 440 a bit on fuel, especially knowing the 6 pack on the same motor pushes 1000-1250cfm, so it was obvious to me at least that the 440 could handle more fuel.  I put off buying a new carb for a very long time, and settled on the 750 carter/edelbrock w/electric choke as a happy medium, I just want it to run well and have some punch to it, don't care to be a street king anymore, the avs handled any other car just fine back in the 70s Including many big block competitors from chevy and ford.
