Hi guys
Ive been trying to remove the rear end from my 68, its an 8 3/4 rear end, I removed the 2 nuts each end of the leaf hangers? from the rear of the car.. Then 4 nuts each side from the front of the leaf springs, I placed jack stands and a jack under the axle and it does slightly come down but then stops, removed jack and stands and still doesn't wont to come down, I heard it comes down with a thud so I was being real carful with stands and a jack. What am I missing? am I missing something?.

Also how do I disconnect the hand break cable from both sides of he car, and where would be the best place to disconnect from.

Thank you kindly

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Shocks, Brake line, E-brake cables , and Drive shaft? !

Sorry but just going by your description you gave.  You took the bolts off the shackles, but you still left them in the bushings? Depening how stiff possibly seized up your bushings are, your gonna prolly have to get in there with crow bar or something to get it moving.  The front hangers should be able to pivot up allowing the spring to drop down.  I would have a jack stand under this if they seem to be giving you some trouble. Once the front is out you can pull the rear out of the shackles.  This will drop your springs and then your axles should be left sitting on your jack.

I have heard of taking it all out in one ( spings still attaced ) but thats a bit of a balance act for me since  I was doing it by myself.

Ohh ya take the drums off to , just to take aways some of the weight while moving.

Make sure the axle is dropped all the way down when removing the leaf springs, you dont't want any tension on the springs.

I just did my Challenger all in one piece. Get it good and high on jack stands then put a jack under center "pumpkin" to ease some of the tension on the bolts. Remove drive shaft u-joint, shocks, brake line, and e-brake cable. Then completely remove the rear shackle bolts (these sucked! But I believe taking them loose from the frame ended up my best option.). The whole mess should be floating at this point and pivoting on the front mounts. Remove all those bolts, roll straight back a few inches, and lower the jack until everything clears the car. Some people will unbolt the rear shackles and let them lay on the ground then undo the u-bolts from the axle and remove it separately.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Hi guys thanks for the info

every thing is disconnected, shocks drive shaft, brakes cables, apart from e break cable not sure what to do will probably end up cutting them off.

Ive looked at it again, and its the bolts in the leaf hangers that are in there nice and tight, will have to start working them out

Thanks for you're help much appreciated

where are you trying to take the E-brake apart from???  If its under the car at the adjuster, just loosen off the adjusting not, and pull out the two locking tabs, pretty straight forward.

If you are trying to take off from insde the brake drum,  then take a socket that just fits on the end of the flared locking tab, take a hammer and knock the socket over the the flared tabs so it closes them ,   you should be able to just pull it out then.

I think I broke 5 of Eight bolts between the two hangers when taking them off. There not that expensive for new ones !!
