Removing General Lee Stickers

Might be going to look at an orange 70 that has the General Lee stickers on it, just wondering if these are likely to leave a mark if removed ? I think they have been on the car for about 6 years, the car has been garaged so it's not like it's been left out in the sun where the paint would have faded, also any tips on removal ? I assume the General Lee stickers are of a similar material to Boss stripes on a Mustang ? Thanks

being that is was stored inside i would say you "might" see some fading difference . you can try a buff and polish of some sort and make it less visible

Because the car has a clear coat, any fading of color in the color coat cannot be addressed as the clear coat will prevent you from reaching it and the the color difference you're seeing, if any, is at the basecoat level.

Again, if any color fading. its just hard to say. six years with stickers.
as far as removal, i've never removed stickers. but i would say get a plastic scrapper and maybe once you start a corner it will all come up at once. :shruggy:

like whats been said  ,   single stage paint or base & clear ?   so many variables , if the decals have been put on soon after it was painted , even if it was 2k & baked,  prolly have bruised the paint ie see the marks where the decal was  ,
faded paint , orange & red  are those colors that fade quickly,  would think doors might be okish , if any where its going to show is the roof !!  ,
don't know how good the prep was underneath paint  what type of paint , you could go peeling off the decals & the top coat orange comes with it !
then again ,   may well be ok , & no drama !  quick polish up  & never know the difference !

You can get a removal tool at paint supply stores or online.  It looks a bit like a polishing wheel.  They are suppose to not burn or damage the paint.  I have one, but have not tried it out on anything yet.  You can also try heat.  A hair dryer is the safest way.  Depending on the vinyl, it may come off in pieces(not fun) or nicely in larger strips.  After that, you may need to use some goo gone or similar product, if there is any residue left.

no offence ,
would never use that for removing decals !  is ok for removing double sided moulding tape etc !! but on a decal nooo !   best warm it up with a hot air gun or hair dryer , use a new plastic  bondo spreader to get the corner started , or  finger nail  :yesnod:

Lord Warlock

The removal wheel eraser does work on decals, I used one to remove an RT stripe I put on the car last year and it did take the stripe off and did not damage the paint underneath.  I removed the original RT stripe using a heat gun and got it off in a few pieces, the older stripe material appeared to be thicker and more durable than the newer one i put on, I tried using a heat gun with the new one and it kept tearing off in small pieces, so i used the decal eraser tool which mounts on a drill and it did remove the stripe easier than the heat gun was doing.

Both methods, eraser wheel or heat gun, work effectively but you run a risk of burning the paint with either one of them if you're not careful.

I prefer a heat gun on a low setting. Always keep it moving, work an area at a time (12"x12" or so). I would not use any kind of tool or scraper otherwise you run risk of damaging the paint.
Once the surface becomes very warm (NOT hot!), you can start a corner with your fingernail and gradually peel it from there. Peel it back onto itself, do not pull straight up or at a sharp angle otherwise you risk pulling up the paint with it.
The glue residue WILL be a nightmare. 3M makes a good solvent for this, or you can use a paint prep solvent. I would not use anything like acetone or denatured alcohol.
If the car was stored indoors any paint fading should be minimal unless the car was painted in a real crappy type of paint. Once the decals & glue residue are off you may want to sand the areas with some ultrafine (2000) grit sandpaper & buff.
Good luck!

Many thanks for the tips and advice

I used the eraser wheel on the 440 decals on my hood.Scary at first taking a drill  driven tool on your paint.Worked great, best of all no ghost images even thou they were on there for about 10 years.
Might depend on color regarding your worries about fading.Roll the dice a see what happens.
