I have a 73 Charger that has a 74 440. it had a bad starter when I got it. I got a starter at the parts store, but it is made different and the connection posts are located in a bad spot, as they are very close to the engine block. I had to grind down the plastic cover for the contact points to even get it to fit without touching the block. Now it fits, and starts really well, but I am concerned that when the engine gets warm, it will toast that starter...??? I suppose I will end up having to get one of those high torque mini starters...??? I see them on Ebay for anywhere from $80 to a few hundred bucks....pretty big price difference! I want to be able to drive this car anywhere once it is restored. Has anyone else ran into this with a 440 starter?

You may be able to remove the plastic connector, on some starters, this was an add-on
to orient the connectors for certain applications.

See if it is the type that is removable, leaving the original studs that may fit your set-up better.

R Us, as a whole I have not had any problems from just the heat. Most times I had one fail was because of a poor rebuild.

Never had that problem. A 318 starter works for a 440 also. Do you have any pic's ?
