The 88 car is still far from completion,  but I am hearing that the wheels of progress are turning.

First off, this is not a new photograph.    This is from June 2001.     The car is the real #88 Daytona.     In 1972 the car was reskinned as a 1971-74 Charger.   This was a common thing to do.   You can see the top of the Gen 3 Charger roof still on the top of the roll cage.   You can also see the original B5 paint on the side of the roll cage.

The guys with the car all are important in the wing car history.    Most of them had direct interaction with the #88 car.    They were here to verify the car was the real deal, and did so.

Bill Wright - Chrysler Space Division - Huntsville Aerodynamics.  Bill's group was responsible for developing instrumentation used for data acquisition as well as the Daytona's 3/8 scale tunnel testing.    Bill still lives in Alabama and has a small crop of Hemi cars.

Larry Rathgeb (red suspenders) - Chrysler Race Group.  Larry was the liason between the Chrysler racers on the track and the factory.  His primary area of expertise is as a chassis man.    Graduate of the Chrysler Institute of Engineering.  Larry led the test team that ran the #88 Daytona.   Larry is retired and lives in the Detroit area.

John Pointer (center) - Chrysler Proving Grounds.   John is attributed to sketching the first Daytona with nose and wing.   John supervised the build and Proving Grounds testing of the first Daytona with the funky handmade nose and wing.   John is retired and lives in the Detroit area.

George Wallace - Chrysler Engineering.   George area of expertise with the race group was "performance analysis" or being able to interpret the test numbers.   George graduated from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering in 1953.   Before data acquisition equipment was developed, George rode along in the race cars to sense what it was doing and to write the readings down.   George remembers all that happened, and lives in Southern Cal.    He is also a racing transmission expert and consults for B & M.

John Vaughn - Chrysler Space Division - Huntsville Aerodynamics.    John did the wind tunnel testing on the 3/8 scale Charger models and the Daytona.     John passed away in 2002.

May not be a new one, but it's a great one.  Thanks Doug!

Here is the car as purchased at Don White's shop in Iowa.    Don raced it from 1971 thru 1977, the last years only on dirt.    When too old to run any more, it was put out to pasture, literally.     Again, this was pretty typical.   Some of these cars got rebodied again as Magnums.   Photo credit goes to aerowarriors.com   There is an excellent article on the car there.
