That video has popped up on car forums a couple times in the last few years.  Shows how dangerous early auto racing really was.  Even decades later it was still bad.  

I don't think it got a lot better until things starting changing in motorsports in the early 1970s.  Speeds all over the racing world were getting so fast it was threatening the spectators and killing too many of the popular drivers.  

So the racing organizations started imposing real limits to the growth of speeds year after year.  That allowed the safety race to finally start regaining ground on the speed race.
