On a 69 Plymouth GTX 727 trans, I have a trans leak coming from the vertical gear selector shaft where the shift linkage connects to and goes inside the trans.  Is the seal accessible by dropping the trans pan or is it something that you need to drop the entire trans to repair?

you can do it in the car...you need to drop trans pan and valve body...they make a tool for this seal...I used a nut, bolt, & flat washers to install mine...make sure you put it in the right way

Any picture of what the tool might look like or where to get it?  I'll probably pick up the tool as both my parents have auto tranny's.  Granted, the chally has a 904 and the GTX has the 727 but I bet they probably use the same tool.

you DON'T need to drop the pan! It is possible to remove the old seal and install a new seal from above (did it myself). Actually there are two seals (large outer seal, small inner seal which is the throttle pressure shaft seal).

see here (bottom of the page): http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=2893018

btw if you remove the throttle pressure shaft seal you need to hold the shaft up (don't drop it into the transmission or you have to remove the pan) till you have installed the new seal. see here: http://www.ihpartsamerica.com/forums/transmission-tech/2043-t407-tf-727-diy-reseal-2.html
