Dyno run...

Well she is done and over with and i did my first dyno run ever in my life.

Something's really stood out.
1. People exaggerated their hp alot and i mean alot people quote their engine stand numbers vs whats to the wheel.  They are alot of factors in between.
2. The dyno (as cooter mentions) makes people cry in the corner knowing their actual tru numbers vs what they quote in magazines.
3. Alot of things can go wrong on the dyno, wrong as in something just by chance happens to your car and u cant run.

With those mentions here is my run after the challenger which by chance had the same engine size as mine.  He had a 440 in there, i believe, and rebuilt the original 383 i don't remember but his numbers were 200, i think. Then came me after his brief run.

My numbers were 301hp and 385ft-lb which i understand as Paul G told me, respectable street numbers.

Yup, I think a Dyno can be a very humbling thing at the very least, downright humiliating at worst.  Kudos to you, as I think it takes a lot of balls to put yourself, and you are putting your self up there, as in pride, honor, etc.  Your numbers are respectable, what I want to know is what you plan to do with this revelation.  Are you content with what you have, or are you going to look for more power?

Suspensions, brakes, and power are in that order.  I almost have all the hotchkis pieces one piece at a time, then comes a bigger brake setup and finally maybe a 440 stroked to close to 500 buildup.

But with the engine I'm happy with her and she has lots of power, i can easily go around quoting 400 plus but now i got a paper to prove it vs some other guys who said, well the literature said my camaro ls has 600hp, etc...blah it's to the wheels thats important not what the engine makes out of the body.

I'm on the same plan as you are: suspension bits, one-maybe two at a time, then my 440 rebuilt to my 'specs.  I wouldn't even think to lie about my HP; if I was making any more than 250 to the wheels I'd honestly be surprised...

Your car did great. What really tickles me is how many good running cars get on the dyno and make sub 200 horse at the wheels.  Nothing wrong with that. Most stock small block builds are in that range.

It's just a number.  The real importance is how does it run?

I love the way my car runs now.  I have no clue how much hp is left in that old thing but it has way more power than I will ever need.  My daily can safely pass one car at a time, the Charger can do 4 or 5 at a time.  No need for more juice here.  If the dyno tells me it only has 250 hp then I will say 250 hp is more than I need.

Same with torque, which I need a lot more than hp as my car rarely see 4000 rpm.  I have no idea how much it has but with my tall tires and 2.96 gears it still burns rubber so I would say it has enough.   :icon_smile_big:

Some guy asked me a while back how fast my car goes over the 1/4 mile and I told him we will likely never know.  He was very confused.

It said I was going 160mph based on my rpm setup they had.  To be honest with u paul mentioned that the dyno was actually under inflat8ng numbers and I looked at my pull vs rpm I cut ky engine offe at ar3 diff.  Compu5er saids I cut off at 4500rpms but actually my rpms were 5500.  The dyno is based on rs.  Based on that I think I have more.....

Just seen it on facebook!Very nice one sir!Found the back wheels "funny",they looked like they were hardly spinning while the engine screemed!

I brought my '08 SRT Challenger to the same show and was looking forward to seeing what power my 6.1 Hemi was capable of producing......I followed the "dyno guys" instructions bringing the RPM's up to 2500 and holding it there until ready to apply the fun pedal.....then I hit the pedal....and got nothing...just a dead pedal.  It seems as if the "Rev Limiter" kicks in if the front wheels are not turning.....Apparently, you can by-pass this with a Diablo hand tuner.  It’s funny that you can’t run the car on the dyno yet you can do burn-outs all day long…..”So I have been told”.  Anyway, I will run it at a later date and see what the numbers are.  I wanted to compare 6.1 to the 360 6-pak I have in my ’67 Charger..it should be interesting seeing the difference 40 years make.

They had trouble with a couple of the late model Mopars doing that. Somehow traction control or stability control will not turn all the way off. I wanted to see what the RW power was as well.

so that was you glad to see a face to a computer name

There was a yellow modern charger up there the bumblebee version 5.7 hemi and he pushed 300hp to the wheels, but forgot his torque.  Then another black one came up there after my run and had the same engine the 5.7 and he got 400hp and I asked how he did he had a diablo tuner (I think) and remapped everything etc..on his car.

I think with modern cars the HP is better numbers than our old cars, but torque is something hard to change as much difference wise.

I realized though though it could of been the dyno itself that gave you those numbers could be bad or could be good.  Im sure your torque was a lot better than mine thats for sure with a 440 and HP is easily can be changed with new heads, headers, etc..
