Pinion speedo gear compatability

I've been searching for a pinion gear for the A833 four speed in my car and I ran across what looks like a newer version of the same thing for a "Jeep Dodge Mopar" except it's substantially cheaper than those found at classic Mopar online stores. The seller doesn't seem to know what exactly it fits (I did send him a question about it) so I thought I'd ask you guys. It's a 38-tooth gear and it's blue which looks correct for my trans. Any idea if it will work?

I found the old part numbers for these gears and called my Dodge dealer to inquire about it. Turns out (according to him) these gears were used in just about everything from 1951 to 1992, and they no longer make them. Genius, isn't it? A part that works in 41 years worth of Mopar models and they no longer make them. :2thumbs:

FYI all the pinion speedo gear part numbers start with 25389 and the last two digits are the tooth count. For example, I need a 38-tooth gear so my part number is 2538938.

I just checked my box-o-gears.....closest I can come is a 37 tooth.....sorry

We need to sticky A 383wing for his supply of the in between speedo drives, new ones only in two teeth increments
:D

There are a few that are still stocked at the dealer. Of course, those are the ones that don't seem to fit anything! It's not surprising that they fit decades worth of cars as Mopar used a derivative of the 727 and 904 from the 60s through the 90s and the 833 through the 80s. Cars these days have an electronic sender so they don't need the gear. Otherwise we'd probably still have exactly the same parts. I have found that there's usually somebody selling them at reasonable prices on eBay. If you want one that's correct for a 28" tire with either 3.23, 3.91, or 4.10 rear gears then they'll gouge you a bit - but nothing like the dealer! Those things quadrupled in price overnight when Chrysler decided to get rid of them. Typical with them in my experience.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I got most of mine from local trans shop that had cores and gears on the shelf....I think my highest number is 37, and lowest is 23....I got all the correct ones in my 3 cars now....

I called my local Dodge dealer and as usual it was like calling Pep Boys. Might as well be asking for Chevelle parts.

If the 833 has the aluminum adapter it will take the long-stem pinion like in the OP. You need to know the axle ratio and the tire diameter to determine which pinion is correct.

Here are the current part numbers for the long-stem speedo pinions:

24 WHITE 3410024
25 BLUE 3410025
26 RED 2538926
27 WHITE 52068149
28 BLUE 52068150
29 BLACK 52068151
30 YELLOW 52068152
31 GREEN 52068153
32 BLACK 52068154
33 YELLOW 52068155
34 GREEN 52068156
35 ORANGE 52068157
36 RED 52068158
37 WHITE 52068159
38 BLUE 52068060
39 GREEN 52068061
40 ORANGE 52068062
41 RED 2538941
42 WHITE 2538942
43 BLUE 2538943
44 BLACK 2538944
45 Yellow 2538945
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I need a 38 tooth gear. I see new ones frequently that are labeled for use in newer Mopar applications, like the one linked below. Will they work in a 68 four speed?

So I guess the long and short of it is, nobody knows if thiese Jeep gears will work in our cars? :shruggy:

A383Wing

I don't see why they would not work...the shaft looks the same as the ones i have here...as long as the length is equal....

I can go measure the overall length of my used ones here to see if they are the same..unless you got one to measure. Auction said 2.9" long.....   :shruggy:

Contact the seller and ask him if the pinion he's selling is exactly like the one pictured in the auction. If it is, you're golden.

I believe it is but I will ask. Another seller described them as being the same but mentioned that a portion of the inner drive wire on some cars "might" need to be filed down for it to work. I assume the inner drive wire is just the end of the cable. :shruggy:

I asked a seller the above question and here's the reply: That is correct, its likely you will have to but thats not always the case, just look when you install it.
