Do you have to lower the steering column to get the instrument cluster out of a 68 Charger?

Brock Samson

nope: but ya gotta disconnect the speedo cable and watch out for scratchin your Steering colum and your arms and wrists 'd put on some tight fitting long sleaves and maybe even some thing like a peace of cloth and/or vasoline atop the colum cause it's a really tight fit commin out of there... and the bottom edges are sharp!  :icon_smile_angry:
one other thing, if ya go to disconnect your heater control A/C assembly from under the dash, be really carefull cause there's nothing holding that stuff togeather in there and if ya expect it to just stay in place it'll fall, hit the tranny tunnel or console and all the unmarked cardboard cams that control the push pull funtions of the levers will scatter,.. leaving you steaming mad and usin cursing words you didn't know you knew like a baptist at Easter sevice speakin in tounges..
Now ask me how I know...  :'(

TO's gonna chime in here any moment i told him what to do yesterday...

I would lower it a bit or at least take the steering wheel off.   Just taking the lower support plate off the column helps tremendously

man-o-man be careful not to break off the lower right hand corner of the dash face, also the amp gauge will give you trouble because it wires are bolted from the harness to the gauge. Also be very carefull removing the wiring plug that goes to the printed wiring board, those pins can come lose and or break off. Just don't force it.
