Rear bearing removal??

Here is the point I am at in this process.... I am rolling the directions in the repair manual, but wanted to ask how some of you did this on your own.  The pic below is the current stage.  Did you use a press to get the inner cone off or did you just "carefully" grind it off?

that or  drill a line of  holes across the collar , make sure  the drill only goes  2 thirds of the way  down & stops well short of the shaft  , then tap tap with a hammer chisel , don't go mad pounding , little at a time & support axle shaft    , what ever you do don't  nic the axle shaft   , slightest  gouge or damage will cause a stress point ! & don't use  heat either
