Front of engine just ahead of distributor where the water pump is at.

if you are running an early WP housing, the sender is under the AC compressor

So the sensor is in the water pump housing? My waterpump was missing when I started the resto and I found a replacement.

yes. temp sender in WP housing. Either in drivers side under AC compresor pointing straight down, or in the front of housing on passenger side pointing towards rear of car.

I appreciate all the help!
My location (the sensor is missing) is on the upper passenger side; I assume when you say it is facing the rear of the car you mean the part of the sensor that screws in faces the rear; the protruding part that you attach the wiring boot on faces the front of the car, correct?

On my '68 440 it is located on the water pump housing as shown in the picture.
The new aluminum water pump housing has it located on top near the heater hose connections as in CDR's picture.
