Fuel gauge reading is wrong

I just got my 68 Charger RT running again after 30 years in my garage. I replaced the fuel sending unit during my restoration. When I got it running the gauge read E when 1/4 full and 3/4 when full. I checked the gauge by grounding the sending unit gauge wire and it went to full.  I got another sending unit and it dis the same thing.  What can cause this?

All the new sending units are the same, you have to bend the float rod to get it to read correct, it may take a few attempts. If you still have the old one you can graft the old unit on the new tube.

I usually put 10 gallons in an empty tank, then bend the float arm to get the gauge to register 1/2 full.  That should get you close to reading properly.
