Tracking down an old Charger

I'm trying to track down a 1969 Charger my dad owned and sold on Long Island, New York, but unfortunately all I have is the plate number it had at the time, which remained on his next few vehicles. I did have a few old photos, but can't find them anymore. (I posted one of them on here years ago, but it was so long ago that it doesn't show up on the original post.) Trying to obtain the car's VIN, I had the NYS DMV run a search of vehicle registrations for any Chargers attached to the plate number, but nothing came back.
Does anyone know of any other way to get more information on the car? Has anyone had any luck with this kind of thing in the past?

In case, by some miracle, someone on here might know the car, here's some info on it:
At the time it was sold it had a 383, 4bbl, V8. Orange-Red in color (something like Hemi Orange), black hardtop, black stripe on back, white interior, Cragar S/S wheels.
Bought from a private owner around '75 in Central Islip (Long Island). Sold in Ronkonkoma, NY to a private owner in Queens about '76.

Thanks!

Does NY Motor vehicle do. A DL check on your Fathers license and all the vehicles he owned. But after 20 years they fall out of the system.Or maybe the insurance company or old insurance card or warranty folder or and dealer paperwork .A original owner still might have around or gave to next purchaser. That had cars vin.Theres usually 3 forms at time of purchases Dealers copy State Taxes copy and owners copy .Anyway to find original owner

Anything to work with will help http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,78028.0.html

You can look for it in NY newspaper tracking owners

Thanks for the reply. I've searched old classified ads but had no luck, and we don't have any old paperwork on the car. Running a search on the driver's license seems to be the best option. (That's what I did before, except last time I included the plate number. In case I actually have the wrong plate number, I'll leave it out this time.)

Thanks again!
