I have a 383 based 496 in my '71 and I absolutely love it. Dynoed at 530 hp, 630 lb/ft. 727 & 3.23s. I built it in 2008, drive it every day I can (that it doesn't rain or when I need my truck). It sees north of 5000 rpms often, and cruises at 3200 on the freeway, if I go a little over 75. I drove it to Columbus in 2009, and even made a few passes while I was there, and many other road trips around the southeast. It has some"loudness" to it, besides the exhaust. When it's cold, you hear some piston noise, but it goes away quickly. The cam is a Lunati Voodoo with 1.6 PRW rckers, and they make some racket over 3g cruising. I don't think I'd be happy witout all the low end torque, and I look forward to a 5 spd someday soon.( Passon 5 speed, please!) Anyway, 431, 470, 496, whatever you get, don't skimp on the heads. Buy some Eddys and have them ported before you try them on. I wish I did. Maybe then I'd have closer to 600 hp!

the 438 is basically a 440 in a low deck block removing over  6 lbs of rotating mass with shorter pistons & maintaining the 1.7 rod ratio , they are great package for power & durability . When you go up to the 496 the piston is very short with the oil ring over the wrist pin , more of a race build but for the amount of miles most use these cars these days it would still last for years .

Thanks!

A warmed over 383 works great too.

Wow. I was surprised to see this thread revived.

I agree with Chryco. The 438 would make some great power and has a better rod ratio.

I did the 496 even though I don't really need all the power and torque, but it is fun to drive. :drive: Just wanted to go big since it was the first time I had money to build something like this for the car.

A warmed up 383 would probably be fun enough and cheaper to build.

What do you mean by "warmed" 383?
