Ashtray troubles

I took my ashtray apart to paint the dash and now when it's back together it has a 1 inch gap at the top it won't seat properly what did I do wrong

Maybe it just looks weird with no pads on around it

The no pad thing makes sense.  Beyond that we'd have to see pics.
