Exhaust popping, I am puzzled???

My charger is popping in the exhaust.  It only occurs on highway driving.  I put my foot into the gas and get up to 80-85mph and then let off the gas and settle down to about a constant speed of 60mph.  Once I am at that 60mph for a few seconds I get some pops out of my exhaust.   I just replaced the intake and placed a new edelbrock carb on it with an electric choke.  The carb is set up perfectly.  I adjusted the timing, dwel, and the rpms in park and gear are perfect.  The previous carb was worn out and had several vapor leaks.   The car would smell like a gas spill after driving it with the old carb.  The car does have a real old exhaust system with glass packs.  Can a worn out glass packs cause this problem.  The car does not pop on deceleration and when it does pop there is no hesitation or jerking of the car.  Thanks for any help or advice.

You may want to pull the spark plugs and check them for fouling. An old carb can cause flooding and could've possibly fouled the spark plugs and if you are running the vacumm advance on the distributor you may try un hooking and plugging it off and see how it runs with it disconnected. I have always plugged the advance off on all the one's I work on and just run the mechanical advance on the distributor.

Thanks for the input, I will try that and see what happens.

I want to say thank you.  Put in the new plugs and the noise is gone :2thumbs:.
