Good luck.  You get what you pay for man.  Even then I had mine back in the shop three times.  Guy claimed most of the new gears are Chinese made crap.  Couldn't ditch a major whine with the new 3.55's.  Switched to a used set of 3.23's and I am much happier.  Not a place to cheap out as you will be miserable...whining...vibrations....etc...  I still have what could be an out of balance drive shaft after I had him balance it.  Fine the best local shop you can and pay the man.   Calling the local shop to see what he has used might be your best option.

Good feedback.  I'll look for a used 3.55 gear set or a high quality 3.73 (but they appear to be rare).  The builder has a good rep.

Hmmmm well ill add to the " you get what you pay for" line. It was $900 to rebuild my 8 3/4 a few years ago. If the guy has a good reputation and you don't mind swapping it out sure

See, I'm a little confused here. $900.00/$700.00/etc. to rebuild an 8 3/4 when Brand new Dana 60's are out there for $1500.00??

I'm looking at $1,000 total to do an 8 3/4 at this point.   The car has the original rear in it, is a standard charger, and we'd like to keep it as original as possible.  Plus, I'm not pushing the torque that would require a Dana and $500 is a lot of cash for us right now.   I just want to make sure I'm using good components.

Search CL for used pigs, there's plenty out there and much cheaper.   For $500 you should be able to find quite a bit of sg's.  Personally I prefer open gears, I like taking turns.  Open 3.23's could bring a few hundred as well but I'd keep it.

The 3.23 open I have now only has around 3,000 miles on it since being rebuilt in 2001 so it should be worth something.  I search craigs list often but it seems to have a lot of 489 rears and I'd like to stay with a 742.  SHOULD have built it the way we wanted back tin 2001 but my dad wanted to even keep that stock.  :shruggy:

Ah yes, I do see the 489's a lot but rarely a 742.  I'll keep an eye open around here (metro Detroit).  There's one 742 with 3.23 open for sale around here, price dropped to $200 but nobody's biting.  I bought my piggy for $40 but it's a 2.94 in a 741, not exactly what you're looking for.   :icon_smile_big:

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

That's just my point almost...I looked and looked for an 8 3/4 "chunk" with a Sure Grip and 3.55 gear. only thing I found was around $600.00 plus shipping.

I simply bought a "truck" Dana 60, cut it myself, narrowed it, welded on "car" ends, and slid my 8 3/4 axles in it for under $500.00 purchase price included. Would I turn loose 1000 HP on it? No, but I'd damn sure try to beat the hell outta it with my ol 440 and 4 gear.

Another 8 3/4 Center Section option may be to call Cass Eslick at "Doctor Diff".

http://www.doctordiff.com/

you get
* Brand NEW 8 3/4 Center Section W/Billet Caps, 489 style,(much stronger than anything ever dreamed of in stock)
* Brand NEW Posi/locker style/cone, or your choice
* Brand NEW U.S. made gears(your choice of ratio)
* Brand NEW Bearings, Cups, Seal, etc.
* Brand NEW "Big" Yoke
* ASSEMBLED correctly

No Fuss, No Muss, No whine, No problems whatsover !
$1375

just for clarity here.....
I still have all the tooling, depth gauge, parts lines, etc., etc., for doing Diffy's....and I bought the above from Cass.... simply because it was still better value for money than doing it myself with a 50 year old case to save what ?? a coupla hundred bucks ?

I bought my 3:91 used...that's why I had to get it rebuild, it was SHOT. Remember these things are now close to half a century old, when installed they were subject to constant use, when removed they sat exposed to the elements in a barn (maybe) There's really no good answer here, unless you have $$$ or mad skills/equipment like cooter you're rollin' the dice.

Moparparts

I have a nice ready to bolt in 742 case 3.23 sure grip, complete center section with the large 7290 yoke, also includes the thrust spacer kit and pinion snubber. It was just pulled from my personal car ran for a few years and has no issues. Only reason i changed is because i put the correct 489 3.55 back in my 70 RR.  PM or e-mail me if interested

If you want a good rear for the cheapest price,you can do what I did.Get the whole third member out of a 77-80 dodge pickup half ton.Luckily I got mine for free,but the one I got is limited slip.I have seen a few that are posi but a little harder to find.The third member bolts right up and you can use your original axles.Mine are 3:55

IIRC, ain't those later model Dodge truck rears 8 1/4 rears? Cover on the back? I think OP was looking for 8 3/4" rear chunks.
