After 12 years of on and off work on my 68 Charger project I finally pulled the trigger and ordered an Alterkation front setup and Street lynx rear.  I am struggling with the decision for the rear end.  I have an 8 3/4 489 casing, but will be putting at least 500 ft. lbs torque through a 5 speed Tremec and have my doubts as to its chances of survival.  I am strongly leaning towards getting a drop in Dana S60, but wanted to check and see what the experts think.

I love my R M S system in my car  :coolgleamA: :coolgleamA: :coolgleamA:

you cant beat the dana 60 for brute strength  :2thumbs: My 2 cents if your not going to be running slicks on a drag strip your 8 3/4 will be just fine.

Hard to know.  You're working the 8.75 pretty hard, that much is true.

The choice of rear tires has as much to do with it as the torque.

Also, not all 8.75 rears are created equal.
You can get "softer" versions of the gearsets for most popular rearends to absorb some of that violence.

I'm running an 8 3/4 in my 512 5 speed Tremec set up. Time will tell if the rear end will hold? You will love the RMS.

Depending on tire choice, you could definitely be pushing the limits of an 8 3/4. It would probably be a good idea to back brace it.

FWIW, I ran my Charger with the stroker motor putting out in the neighborhood of 500 ftlb with the tremec and 8.75. Also ran Nitto drag radials and a slide a link to boot. The clutch was the weak link.

Which brings up some good points. If you're going to hook, get a decent bellhousing and driveshaft loop.

Thanks for the advice.  I imagine at some point I am going to want to bolt on a set of slicks and see what the clock says.  I guess I may as well play it safe and go with the Dana and not look back.  Bill said it should be about 3 weeks before the suspension ships.  Unfortunately I am in TX and the car is in WA with my brother in law, hopefully he gets it installed for me by the time I make it back in June. :2thumbs:
