6 pack mechanical secondaries??

Does anyone know where I can get my outboard carbs modified? I'm wanting to get accel. pumps installed so I can get rid of the vacuum crap and hook them up mechanically. I've thought of trying to convert them myself, but I would hate to screw up my carbs, thought about buying repro end carbs and trying to convert them so if I did screw them up I didn't really lose anything other than a few bucks. Obviously, if I could find a professional to do the mods, it would probably be best, and safest. Thanks, Dale

Go on ebay / moparts / swap meets / etc.  and find an old holley 4782 / 4783 mechanical setup.

Modifying your vacuum setup doesn't give you any accelerator pumps on the outboards.

What are you having problems with?  :scratchchin: We can help.  :yesnod:

The problem I'm having is that my car is a 4 speed, and when your throttle is wide open and you touch ,the clutch to shift, the vacuum chambers keep the end carbs open and the motor revs up, so if you are at 6200 when you try to shift the motor ends up zingin up to 7000 or more. Then they close as you complete the shift and then they have to open again. To prevent this you have to let off the gas sooner then hit the clutch, which slows the car, not good.  The only way to make a quick shift is to just keep your foot flat on the floor and start ripping on the shifter, which is tough on the trans, have already fixed it twice because of this. I realize that putting mechanical linkage on the outboard carbs would be easy, but without adding accel. pumps it will have a heck of a stumble when you stomp it. Thanks guys for any help

Lets see....try checking this link over on Moparts on six packs:

It starts off about idle but covers quite a bit. I have a six pack but my tran. is 727.  :scratchchin:

The closing/opening of the outboards is controlled by the center carb. possibly the linkage between them is loose/miss-adjusted? Fuel level height in the bowls may be sloshing back and forth.....interesting problem.  :scratchchin:

Thanks for the input. I'll recheck my linkage and floats and all the basic stuff. I understand that the center carb controls the opening/ closing of the outboards, but I think the problem I'm having is just the split second of lag time between the center carb closing and when the ends close. I think that is normal, but the outboards take just a second to close when you let off the gas. I had this setup on a car with a 727, and it was the same way. If you let the car get too far out of shape before you lifted you were in trouble cause when you did lift the center carb was the only one that shut immediately, the end carbs stayed open for just a second before they shut. The setup works perfectly in all other ways, drives perfect putting around, runs great when you kick it. I don't think theres anything "wrong" with it, I think its just the nature of the beast the way its designed, if I understand it right. Ive talked to other guys with six packs that had the same hesitation in the outboards closing. That's why I would prefer to modify the outboards to mechanical linkage and add accelerator pumps to them so I'm the one controlling them instead of a vacuum chamber.  Thanks again! Dale

Something is wrong are the vacuum lines hooked up to the right spots how about a few pics of your set up.

I've run my setup over the last 17 years but not had that kind of problem.  :scratchchin: The only way I know of that could go the way your wanting would be to ditch all three carbs for a GM tri power setup.

DBR/T

Are the big block chevy tri power setups mechanical? I thought they were vacuum just like the mopars...??? Are there any carb shops that can do the mods to the carbs like I want? I know some people use the ford tri power carbs cause they were mechanical with accel pumps, but they are holleys w/ side hung floats and the fuel lines enter on the driver side, and I want to stay with the center hung style float bowl.

DBR/T

Maybe i'm going about this wrong....maybe I need to look into making my trans shift better so I don't have to worry about letting off the gas to shift :scratchchin:

The Chevy stuff for Vett's was very much the same as Mopar. The GM tri power for Pontiac used Rochester's I think... :scratchchin: anyway I think I remember something about fuel slopping out of the center carb vent tube at WOT during shift. (That might cause a surge.) Also what I'm wondering is what fuel pump you have? 6BBL wants 5-6lb pressure max with ability for high volume. The Carter M4845 is correct. (Also not very expensive.)
I still can't figure how if the center carb linkage to outboards is adjusted correctly it would not shut the outboards throttle plates when you let off the peddle, it totally overrides the vacuum pod springs. Perhaps a stronger return spring...

DBR/T

you might be on to something with the return spring....mine is pretty weak.....never thought about that helping them shut the secondaries. By the way, just want to say thanks for your help and input!  I'll check that spring!
