ok. How do you tell a 70 383 from a 70 440 crank?  And is there a regular and hp crank? thanks

Externally, it is hard to tell the difference between the 2 cranks. The 440 and 383 cranks were made from forged steel. Measure the diameter of the main journals to tell the difference.

This.  440's are larger.

In '70 the 383 could have a cast crank, 440 is forged. The 440 mains are 2.750" while the 383 are 2.625".
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

70 383 cranks for HP engines are forged, only 2bbl engines got cast.

I thought all 383 cranks were forged?

'70 and '71 383-2 got cast cranks when mated to the automatic...standard shift got forged. The factory Parts Catalog has a note to be sure of type before ordering replacement parts.

Main bearing measurements are the only way to tell for sure.
