Another Ebay question: Reserves

Do you ever reveal the reserve price of your auction?
I think it is a bad idea. I feel that once people know the reserve it could cause the bidding to slow or stall.
What are your opinions?

If they know the reserve what's the point?  Just have a BIN price up there.

I'll list the reserve sometimes.  Cuts out all the questions how much is the reserve?  Just lets people know what your expecting and if you cant get it then it's not selling.  Doesn't necessarily mean it may sell at that price.  Could go higher for the rest of the auction.  What it does do is allow a safety net for those that just want to play around and bid and not buy the car unless you just happen to lower the reserve later and make them the new owner.  If I really want something then it's nice to know if the purchase price is a realistic goal and not something I'm wasting time on trying to win. If somebody outbids me then ooh well but if it's reserved so high I wouldn't buy it anyway then why waste my energy.

if it were up to me, the starting bid would be the reserve.  it is just a waste of everyones time if people aren't serious about selling an item.  another thing i would do is not close the bidding until 1 minute after the last bid.  i rarely bid on anything until the last second.  the way the auctions are set up, there is no reason to bid early.

I'm one of those guys that always email asking what the reserve it. If it's within my budget I'll bid it up, but if it's more than what i'm willing to pay I don't waste my time.

I also will not waste my time trying to hit someone's reserve. If the reserve is more than I have decided it is worth to possess it, I'm done. More often than not, if I see a "Reserve Not Met", I won't even bother bidding at all.

Also John, don't have buddys bid it up near your reserve, common practice on ebay, for two reasons, you don't want to scare off serious prospective buyers, and also that you can honestly se where the bidding is actually going to on your car as it will give you an approx. real world value of what most out there are/would be expecting to pay for the item .

Paul,
I woldn't have anyone shill bid on my stuff. I wouldn't want that done to me if i was looking at an item, so I wouldn't do it to anyone else.
As of Noon today, the reserve has been met! I am happy about that, but I am not counting my chickens until the car is paid for.

I am amazed at the lack of questions about the car itself. All the questions (and there were a lot!), were about a BIN price or the reserve.

Id have to agree. I sometimes ask the seller his/her reserve in private, if Im interested. I hate BIN, especially listing it. Someone comes along and bids and wipes out the option.

I am thrilled with the results of the auction. I hope the car goes to someone who has the talent and money to restore the car and return it to the road.
I have gotten some wacky questions about the listing. I chalk it up to people not reading the complete listing or not looking at all the photos.
If you look at my ad and see something that is confusing, please let me know so i can correct it.
