Anyone out there have any opinions on the independent front suspension systems available for the 68-70 Chargers. I have seen the Magnum Force, Alterkation and Control Freak suspensions and was wondering has anyone installed one of these and can profide their feedback / opinion. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Ghoste

I've only seen the Alterkation one installed and in use and personally I wasn't that impressed by it but I know there are others who have great things to say about it.  The one I have any experience with doesn't hold alignment well.

Hey Ghoste, did you do an IFS install on a Charger. I have talked to the guy at Control Freak and he swears by his system, he has been very informative and full of information, really nice guy.

Ghoste

It was a Coronet.  i don't anything about the other systems and like I say, even the one I'm talking about I know there are guys who have had great results with it.

Magnum force is not very street oriented.  More of a drag-racer piece.

AkterKtion (RMS) is more of a drop-in deal that is street oriented.  People have raised some theoretical issues with its layout, but as a practical matter there aren't a lot of complaints from owners using it (and there are a lot of them out there on the roads).

XV Motorsports designed a great setup.  But it costs a ton and doing business with them is a PITA.  The RMS deal offers most of the same gains for less trouble.

I am of the opinion that 95% of the people wanting to replace the whole factory front end would be just as happy with the stock one if they knew how to set it up right.  The 45yo stock front end is only a rebuild and a few smart modifications away from being competitive with any of the aftermarket deals.  And there are some durability questions about all the aftermarket setups whereas the stock setup is as proven as it gets.  I wouldn't trade away the original setup on my car for any of the aftermarket ones.  Never mind the cost, never mind the originality, I just like it best.

Mike Dc,
Would you be prepared to share the rebuild info and smart upgrades you mention. If the original suspension can be made to handle as good I'm all for saving money.

Very happy with the RMS in my 71. Handles like a new car now.

Factory IFS is more than up to the task if outfitted with the right parts in the right places.

Now, if you race the car in an environment where quick spring rate changes of 50# are required to dial in the set up to gain an extra .01 of a second per lap time, then you might benefit from a coil over system.

If you want to beef up the stock stuff, a call to Firm Feel will set you up. Be prepared to identify how you use the car, what your objectives are and what you want to spend.

Another alternate route for a compatible system that can be bought as components would be the Hotchkis TVS system. These can be found on Summit or Jegs.

The XV Level 1 kit is also a beefed up, stock based system that provide a big step up in performance. But as mentioned previously, their service is hit or miss.

Performance Suspension Technology and Just Suspension also offer upgrade packages for stock based buildups.

What HPP said.

The main things that the stock setup needs are more caster in the alignment (offset bushings or aftermarket UCAs) and a reworked power steering box.  Combine that stuff with a nice stock rebuild (ball joint & bushing replacement, etc) and the difference will be major.

I called the guy at firm feel and he said he could hook me up and make the car do what I want it to, thanks guys.
I am going to convert to disc brakes as well and I didn't ask if firm feel do spindles. If they don't where is the best place to get them. Will 1.5" dropped spindles give me clearance problems. I plan on using Wilwood 14" rotors with 18" wheels.

73-75 A body spindles
FMJ - Volare , 5th ave , caravelle , Mirada spindles all work
Scarebird has adapters to use your drum brake spindles for disc .
