Tailpipes… or not?

How less restrictive would exiting the exhaust at the axles be instead of taking the pipe all the way over and back out?   All things being equal, any noticeable changes in sound, performance, efficiency – or only negligible ones?  I'm curious if there's been any comparisons or if anyone here is (or was) set up like that.

I like how tailpipes look - just wondering if there's any benefit to not having them.

Thanks.

3 INCH mandrel bent tail pipes will not hurt performance

I don't know all of the specs, but I do know a common problem of not having tailpipes is over eating your rear diff.    :Twocents:

oldcarnut

The street cars I rode in that had them not exiting the side or behind had exhaust fume issues seeping into the car if they were not sealed up good especially in still traffic

I had a car once without the tailpipes and I will concur with the fume and noise thing.  I won't do it again.

It depends.  Do you have a 800 hp engine with 2" compression bent tail pipes, or 300 hp and 3" mandrel bent tail pipes.

My 2 1/4" compression bent tail pipes cost me about 15 hp on a 425-450 hp engine.

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

:Twocents:  would always run tail pipes , stock type set  up  :yesnod:    not a fan of side  side exit pipes  ,  if i had a AAR or T/A  Ebody  , would put tail pipes on  when even it means changing the rear vallance too   ,  :yesnod:

Definatly for tailpipes. I've had both.

No matter how well its sealed and how much sound deadner you install, no pipes will fume you out and be noisey in the cab. You also don't get as well a defined "chop" from the cam with all the noise echoing under the car.

3 inch 40 series flowmasters, no tailpipes, mufflers end at axle, no turn downs

3 inch 50 series suv flowmasters, full mandrel bent out the rear.

Videos are hard to get a good comparison to judge by but with tailpipes is definatly the way to go for any car that will spent even 50% of its life on the street

Just to let you know, a lot of states will not allow exhaust to exit in front or on the axles, friend of mine got hit with a fine when he was pulled over for something else.

That would be a sin.

yeah i know what your saying ,  true  !!  :yesnod:  ,
if they were true side exit exhausts like on grandnational stock cars it would be a different story , but to me the stock set up  looks  well    :scratchchin:   :Twocents:
remember when i was a  a kid  making a monogram challenger T/A model , looking at the exhaust thinking  WTF  :scratchchin:  ,  that don't do noting  at all  , crazy looking  !!  that set up ,

Got it - some good responses I hadn't thought of.  Sounds like its relative and not advisable anyway.

Brightyellow69rtse

ive done both. i have a 3' mandrel bent system now. if i didnt have that id prolly dump it again. i liked the dumped system quite a bit actually.
