Best way to remove pitting in chrome piece?

I just bought a check mark off of e-bay and it has some minor pitting. Before I try using rubbing compound and take a chance of messing it up, I decided to ask you guys what is best.

Send it out and have it re-chromed. Chrome pot metal pieces are not like stainless and cannot be buffed.  they must be striped , buffed and plated.
