How can you tell what CFM a carburetor is?

you run the numbers stamped on it it will identify it. You can just google them and the info should pop u.

Most OEM carbs never got an advertised CFM rating.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I had "heard" that a 4617 carter was about 670 cfm  but aftermarket carbs do have  ## on them ??

That's probably a closer guess than most who would claim a 440 carb is 750 cfm.

Most OEM carbs were around 600-650 cfm as far as I knew.

Always sorta boggled my mind how a 6 pack car could ingest 1200cfm of air for a fairly mild oem engine.

I know that Carter's AFB models were sporatic on CFM ratings in the early years. the AVS models came in 625 CFM (340-383) & 750 CFM (440). Thermo-quads are either 800 CFM (318-360) or 850 CFM (360 HP-440)

It doesnt

11.68 @ 120.2 mph

Well, no it wouldn't. But in saying that 1200cfm seems like a bit much, I know you drive mainly off the center carb which is good for fuel economy and air speed. Open the outboards and what benefit do you get from them on a fairly mild engine that you couldn't get with a good 4 barrel (economy aside)

Rated as a 2bbls, they are 1350 cfm, as a 4 bbl they are 955 cfm.  Generally, the larger cfm will make more power, but only to a point as you imply. With everything being equal, will 955 cfm make more power than an 800 cfm on a stock 440? Maybe, maybe not.  However, with that said, everything is not equal.  Much of the advantage (and it is not small) of the 6 Pack is in the intake manifold.

Chrysler always used a divorced choke. all that means is that the choke thermostat is mounted to the intake, not on the carb like most GM & Ford carburetors, "Divorced" from the carb body. a linkage from the thermostat to the choke opens the choke valve.

Sometimes I wonder the intelligence of the people behind the parts counter. You ask for something simple and they still cant figure it out. It's like you ask for a coke and they hand you a root beer.
