318 oil shaft failure?

My 318 would not run, had extremely loud backfires but didn't make any sense why. I eventually replaced every electronic ignition piece; except the cap and rotor (they were brand new). Finally I pulled the cap, and the center contact was completely wore off. There was brass shavings throughout the cap. I checked to see if the rotor was turning when when I cranked the engine. And it did for a couple revolutions then it quit. The cam and does turn but the distributor does not. I've been having issues with oil blowing out of the dipstick tube and oil breather. Now the distributor has stopped turning.

Is this a oil shaft failure? Aren't they connected (cam and oil shaft)? How the heck did this happen out of the blue, and how the heck did I luck out with the failure happening while in the garage?!!

Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

I bet if you pull the dist drive gear out..you might find some teeth missing on yer camshaft..or yer bushing is gone
