What rear ends came on '68 Newports?

I was told that I could have the rear end out of a cousin's Newport except he doesn't know the size of rear end it has. I'm hoping it's a 8 3/4 to save me from spending a huge amount of money right now. And no at this time I can't really go look at the car myself to find out.

I forgot to mention it originally came with a 383 4bbl....

Google Chilton's on line would be a great help right now and also www.forabodiesonly.com
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Should be an 8.75.

I presume you're just interested in the center section. Obviously, the axle housing would need to be narrowed for anything other than another C body.

Probably going to be a 2.94 or 2.76 open. Might get lucky and find 3.23s. Should be a 742 case assuming it's original.

Yeah just need the center section, already have an A-body 8.75 housing in the barn. Gearing can be changed, right now I just want to try and get the Dart moving again. I do know that a few Newports also came with sure grips but I'm not going to hold my breath :D

Just a guess but it probably has a 3.23 rear. I cannot believe that a 383 4-bbl came with highway gears.... ;)

The 8 3/4" was the only rear end available in any '68 Chrysler.

2.76 was pretty much the standard gear in C-bodies in the sixties unless optioned with the Magnum/TNT engine.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I did notice that the 3.23 sure grip was available with the 383 XP. But yeah odds are it's just a plain 2.76  :icon_smile_big:

Interestingly, the 3.23 was standard with the 383 4-bbl, while the 2.76 was the option. Sure-grip was available with either axle ratio.

Wow now that is looking even better.

BTW this is the same 68 Newport that was the original owner of the 383 XP that was given to me for the Dart as well  :2thumbs:

I'm still pissed we never grabbed the 8 3/4 out of the '68 Newport 383-4bbl we parted out and scrapped :RantExplode:
