Turn signal lever screw

Any idea what size screw is required to attach the turn signal lever on my 68?  The person prior to me to have it apart reattached it with a wood screw!!  And the screw is all torn up. I tired taking the lever to the hardware store, but a size 6 screw is too small and 8 is just a hair too big. I googled a size 7 screw, but couldn't find anything.
The screw that is used for the retaining ring under the steering wheel works great, bit it's too short, so I'm not being blonde about this...
I'd like to avoid buying a new lever just to get screwed!

Take the short screw to a good hardware store to match it up.  If you can't find one you can always re-thread the lever.
