Its a long shot but does the school district offer any compensation for schooling?
Why did the price double?  Is she looking for a 4 year degree?

Man, I wish you would have posted before she began this online thingy. With that said, online education from something other than a real university...........no. $12k for one year of online schooling.........I'm not hammering you bro but something is way out of line here.

Seems there is about 10 levels of soap opera drama happening here. I'll skip on all that.

My take (just a hunch without all the facts): she is now scared to seek a new job, and launch a career. Understandable. It is hard work, and scary, and she will get a hundred rejections. Starting a career (and making use of the skills she just gained) is just plain hard.

So I think she needs tough love from her supportive and truthful husband. It's a combination of coaching, hugging, and swift kicks in the ass. Not that you or any loving husband would do that physically. That's wrong. I say that for dramatic effect only.

My point, you owe her to be the best coach you can be, and that includes love, support, treating her right, and a truthful and honest motivational assist. "toughen up, get on the horse, go big or go home, blah blah blah"

She's scared, that's my take. Who wouldn't be. Your coaching will make the difference, to help get over this emotional barrier and stick her neck out there into the competitive market.

Best wishes Coach. :2thumbs:

no soap opera drama other than 1 she didnt realize what it was gonna cost due to her or the schools fault or 2 she hid the fact that it was gonna cost what it did in which case would really tick me off. im not very good at coaching but the good swift kick in the ass may be in order :scratchchin:

I just had a similar conversation with my wife not an hour ago.   You need to first figure out what you want.  It's obvious you don't want her to keep her current job, and obvious that you feel you're getting nothing for your $24K.

Once you've defined what you expect, have a talk with her about it.   I can tell you from experience that if it gets to the fight stage you're moving backwards.    She'll feel like you're forcing her, and even though she probably does need to get on the stick and hold up her end of the agreement, the LAST thing you can to do get your way with a woman is be high-handed.

Ask her if she's not ready now, when will she be ready?   Any time I give my wife money for anything, I set clear expectations on the when/where/how/why.  It's 99% of the reason I insisted on a prenup.  Above all, make it clear what you expected, what you expect going forward, and stand your ground.   She might fuss, but a woman wants a man who with a spine every single time (not an overbearing asshole, just a man with a backbone), no matter how much bitching they may do to the contrary.

Good luck dude.

Kaplan?  Run!  See if you can transfer the credits to another school.  $24K for an associates degree that may work more against her than for her when looking for a job is absolutely insane.  Maybe she can transfer to a community college.  I work for the University of Michigan health system and when we get applicant's resumes we don't even consider degrees from Kaplan or most of those online schools.  I had a co worker who wanted to get his associates degree through Phoenix U and I told him it was going to be a waste of time and money but he did it anyway and he's still in the same dead end job.  Transfer those credits and get a degree that means something.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Besides all the other advice already given, Kaplan and all..

Maybe suggest that she complete her associates, find a new job with that and then start the next 2 yrs. And do it at a local Community College. Most articles I have read say that many of them are a real bargain for what you get out and frequently they are setup for working folks who are trying to move ahead.

If it were me, I would look at this as a long term project.

Money is an issue. So is one's wife's (and one's own) happiness and perception of self worth.

It sounds like there was a plan that you supported and your wife stuck her neck out to work toward and that has changed.  If in the end she gets a higher paying job and one she prefers more, then good. In the mean time, I would do the best to work with the situation.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Holy! That website has 102 complaints for Kaplan University.
I wonder what the real total is from other websites and people that didnt bother to complain.... in the thousands?

So first thing on my list.  I read online college, and a red flag was tossed in my brain.

What I wanna know did she research this thing at all?
I dont understand how somebody could even possibly get themselves into this mess.

Anyway...........

First thing I would do is start trying to figure out how to not pay or get my money back.

As far as how to advance her career.
I think you should suggest getting a better job within the school system.
That way she can stay where she likes and at the same time bring home more bacon.

Oh and....

Im not sure who much you have left to pay but....

It looks like there was a class action lawsuit in 2007 that they settled on.
And it also looks like there is a current Class action going on.

If it where me I wouldnt pay them another cent.
I would seek legal advice.
