318 looking to get more power

I'm looking at trying to get just a bit more power out of a stock 318.  It has a stock manifold and carb now.
I was thinking of changing to an aftermarket dual plane manifold and maybe a 650 holley carb.  I could swap a cam into also but only if it would gain me a reasonable more amount of power and work w/stock heads.  I have stock exhaust manifolds but also a set of headers I could swap in if swapping out a cam.
If going for a cam swap, any suggestions on an excellent cam/manifold/carb combo for the following performance application.
Street driven only must run on pump gas 92/93 octane tops.  3600# car, automatic, 3.23 gears.  Not looking to break into the 11's and make unrealistic HP.  Just want something a bit more peppy.

On the other hand, if it is going to cost me x amount and see little gain, would I be better off swapping in a 340?
I honestly tried looking for a wrecked late model Ram/Dakota/Durango/Ram Van for a complete driveline swap(FI  ;) ), but the cheapest I found so far was close to 3k, much more than I want to spend now.  I'd spend 1.5k for a complete FI driveline.

Well, you could bottle feed it  :D

Seriously though, headers are a must.  A 4V helps, but be careful not to go too big.  Cam counts for a lot, but with stock heads, again, don't get too wild.  Gears will carry you far as well.  I ran 4.56's behind my bone stock 318.  Yes, it turned 3300 RPM's @ 55pmh, but it kept the engine in its sweet spot.  :icon_smile_wink:

The key is not to get too wild or spend lots of money on the 318.  Soon you'll find yourself thinking , "You know... that 440 drops right in on the same mounts..."  :icon_smile_tongue:

I would look into getting a set of the 302 [318] or 308 [360] head castings they will give a noticable gain , an engle cam would work well too, K56 grind  approx

Thanks for the replies guys. I did get to thinking.  Obviously going with a cam, no matter how mild, I won't see any reasonable power gain w/o a head change or some type of head work.  If I go cam, heads, manifold, carb I could be looking close to $1100 depending on where/what I buy.  I am going to restore my 69 Charger w/440.  Because all I have are big block parts/spares I think I'll bite the bullet and swap the 440 out of the Charger. I know I'll need a few things to make it all work, but in the end I'll be ahead of the game, I think anyways.
Besides, when the restorification is done on the Charger, I was looking to put a wholoe new engine in so the current one would be just sitting around, that would be a shame.  :icon_smile_big:

you could bolt a set of magnum heads on it.  you can get a rebuilt set for under 500 bucks.  It requires some other parts, but nothing crazy.  you can even get intakes now that have LA and Magnum bolt patterns on them.  that, along with a cam change would probably get you a decent amount of power.  while your old heads are off, you could measure how far down in the hole your pistons are and either mill the heads or use thinner gaskets to make some compression.

most important thing is to match the parts.  no 850 carbs or cams with 600 lift numbers and crazy duration for you.
