I've been looking up 4 speed transmissions for my charger. It used to have an automatic in it but reverse went out so im changing it. My question is if anyone can help is. What all specifically do I need? I know i need the obvious stuff ( tranny, bell housing, clutch and brake pedal,) but what works? Im not super familiar with this stuff and i want to be sure what i buy will bolt up underneath . Any help or tips or ideas would be much appreciated! thanks

Everything that "Bolts up"? = Donor 4-speed car with everything there.

Or....Brewer's performance and Passon Performance.

Wanna go the piece it together route and try and save a few bucks?

B-body trans, shifter/rods, Hump for floor, Pedals from 1966-1970, bracket that is welded to frame available aftermarket, modify your autop trans crossmember to install the 4-speed mount in the MIDDLE of crossmember, clutch/flywheel/Z-bar, and wire in the safety Neutral switch/backup lights...

It ain't as easy as Chevy, but it can be done.

I been looking around... is this floor hump required? Or can i get by with out it?

jaak

Yes, floor hump is required. I have seen some folks make their own (and do a good job, too), but a new one is available, and they are reasonably priced.

Good luck, and keep us posted,

hmm Is it required So the 4 speed will fit under the car? or so the shifter can come through the floor humps hole? Cuz if its just for the shifter I"ll go with out it and just cut a hole.

Chryco Psycho

it allows room for the shifter & shift rods to clear under the floor so yes it is needed .
there is a whole list of parts needed to complete the conversion

Here is why you need the hump....

OK! that shows me exactly what i need to know with that picture! thats aweseome thank you so much lol. So it will clear the linkage an such . Now that i've seen this I may get a hump.. but then again i may go the make my own route as well.
Questions.
1. Is that a pic of your car?
2. It looks like you had to install the linkage after you put the tranny in. Is this so?

Sorry for so many questions. I just wanna make sure i get everything and have a good idea of what im doing. I"ve already found the brake and clutch pedals on ebay and have them ordered.  It was a bitch getting the old one out but i got it. I appreciate all of the help. Maybe i'll start posting pictures soon!

I see that with the picture now. It makes sense.
As for parts. I've ordered the pedals.
1. Bellhousing
2. B Body tranny A833
3. Shifter and shifter linkage

In this whole process Im sending my motor off. Its a 318. I wanna get it bored prob 30 over and get a small cam for it. Clean the heads n I'll put a 4 barrel on it and change the points to electronic dist.

I know I'll need a clutch n all that in addition to my list but if there is anything else im missing let me know
thanks.

This list is for 68-70 but it's pretty complete. However, some of the items that are shown as being reproduced may not be compatible with the 72.

What bellhousings will work for my 318? ive been looking around online and i swear the 440 bellhousing looks like it would fit mine. I want to be sure I get the right one tho. I looked on the Keisler website and the small block bellhousings the bolt holes don't look anything like mine. I have 4 bolts on top of mine and 2 on the bottom that go from the engine to the bellhousing.

One vital issue still to be mentioned: Tell the shop you are putting a 4speed behind it, have them check the crank for pilot bushing preparation and also have them supply and balance your flywheel and clutch assembly with the engine.

yes the shift linkage is installed after the trans in that picture as the shift rods run above the T bar crossmember

You need a small block bell housing. The bolt pattern is completely different from a big block.

Hey thank you for that information! i've had a few people mention that I need to have the shop balance the flywheel and clutch with the engine. I read on another thread if they aren't balanced it'll throw your whole engine outta wack! Thank you sir!
