Anyone know if the 1974 production year ran through mid July like most other years or did the changeover for the 1975 body happen earlier?

Since it is really the last year of the classic Charger I am curious who has the latest build date cars on the site.

Thanks

The build date on mine is January 28 - definitely should not be the latest.

That is a good idea. I talked to him last year on some of the '74 options and production #'s but, forgot to ask that question. I am interested in a car built in late May so I was wondering how close that was to the end. It seems like the '74 models don't quite have the following yet.

This may help you some I work at a Mopar plant now. So I know how things are done. When changes are small like 71 to 72 . The last 71 and 1st 72 could have been built on the same day. As the last 71 would go down the line they would run what we call skips (empty carriers). This gives them time to bring the new parts to the line. Then the line would run till all 71's were built. At that point the line stops & the line works go home for a 2 weeks shutdown. Some time in July (most of the time). Now When there is a big change like 74 to 75. It is really hard to tell when they shutdown for change over. It all depends how much they did to the plant. Add in the fact that Chargers were built at more than one plant. The plant I work at is getting ready for a big change over so the line will work 9hour shifts 6 days a week from now till May 16. At that point it will shutdown and not come back on line for months. A long changeover could be as long as 6 months if they strip out the plant and put in all new stuff.

Thanks KMPX2

That is very helpful and gives a good explanation of what goes on firsthand.  Hopefully, some '74 build dates will narrow down the end date a little better.

I wonder what the shutdown time frame was for the 1970 to 1971 models. Although, that would have only affected St. Louis.

Only one '74 Charger owner on the site? They must be pretty rare.  :icon_smile_big:

Think I will change the title of the thread a little.

I'm a 73 owner but I would believe that it would be in July sometime.Even with the body change. The new models then still weren't due in the showrooms until October, not like nowadays.

Sorry to dig up a old thread but I have a 74 Charger Rallye with a July 24, 1974 Build Date.  That is on the door Sticker.  The fender tag has a 611 code for June 11.

I would think that is a very late build date for a 74 Charger.

451-74Charger

Ill look at mine if I can get to it, but im sure mine was Oct 73

it took it a long time to get from the body shop to the final assembly building!
