Steering selector freeplay on column shift car

My cars shift lever can go one gear in either direction when its in a given gear without changing the actual gear. What parts need to be checked to firm up the play or better yet eliminate it. John

nylon bushings in every moving part fo the linkage need to be cheacked or replaced

I have the bushings for the 2 that come off the trans.  What about the column itself, how many are inside (do I have to pull it out of the car to do it?) and does anyone know if the bearing that is just outside the firewall is repoped or available (it's the large nylon bearing that the shift tube level covers) and would this part help solve my problem? thanks John
