Horn wire smashed flat?

When I took the horn rim off the wheel I noticed that the horn wire had been smashed flat in-between the horn plate and its mounting surface on the wheel. Looking at the mating surfaces of these two parts I don't see where the wire can go where it wouldn't get smashed when assembled. Am I missing something? Is the wire supposed to be smashed?

Yea, I know the picture sucks...

that wire is long !! on the S81  three spoked wood grain wheel its much shorter it goes up through a hole furthest between the horn button /plate & the ground spade connector , if that makes sense !
if no one has got a picture , & if it is indeed what i'm talking about & i've not miss read it , will take my horn pad off tomorrow & take a picture

****EDIT**** battery for my camera has taken a dump wont charge , so can't get pictures of mine yet  , but see green arrows on first picture wire goes up through one of them , like a say on a S81 wheel  , then look at bottom picture to see how it runs to the spade grounding terminal

On mine, the wire wasn't smashed at all. Sounds like someone that did the wring in that car ran the wire the wrong way or something? :-\ . Because mine wasn't even like that when I removed my horn ring to work on the turn signal switch. I see what you mean in the photo about the wire. Strange.

Looks like it was routed the wrong way. Not supposed to be smashed.

:-\ I wonder how I'm going to fix that? Can't butt connect it... but I suppose I could cut it and solder it back together with a bit of heat shrink to insulate it. :scratchchin: When I get home I'll take a closer look for those two holes.

The wire can't go through the holes the green arrows are pointing to, those are the screw mount holes for the horn switch.

Curtis, IIRC the lead wire is either part of the switch itself or the contact ring. If your switch looks old or corroded, you could probably find a new one. Or, cut the wire & solder in a new one, heat shrink, etc as you stated. Shouldn't be too bad of a job.
The wire I believe goes thru the large hole in the center. I can try to get a shot of mine for you tomorrow if you'd like.

on my cars, the black horn wire goes through the large hole in the middle and then connects to the horn spade terminal

I just worked on mine last night bull, it has an elongated slot at the top of the plastic inner so the horn wire can route through it. I sanded the copper contact ring to a smooth surface and inox spray lubed the plunger contact wheel and got the resistance down from 900 ohm to about 4 ohm, - win - with just labour and no parts  :2thumbs:
No pics though, its late on friday and had a few  :icon_smile_big:

:P I just woke up from a nap on the couch and went out to have another look. I'm doubting the wire is supposed to go through the center because that's where it was. That's how it got smashed. I took another couple of pictures of how it looks like it should go; up the side of the horn rim rather than up through the center. :shruggy: The wire is mounted so close to the outer edge of the hub that (as far as I can tell) it clears the horn switch when installed as shown below.

Thanks, Bob. I have yet to see any slot but I'll take another look.

A NAP??? On the couch??  ;)

Ha!
We were both wrong, TT. Just checked my '68, and yes the horn wire is routed to the outside just like in your pics & like you thought as well Curtis. TT is showing the correct routing.
Don't worry TT, we're all getting older and my CRS is suffering as well.
