G'day all. Newbie here to the forum and also to Charger ownership. Recently bought a white 68 R/T and imported it to Australia.

Quick (and probably stupid) question. Were there engine numbers in '68 containing the Vin? if so where? I have read conflicting information and i am having trouble locating my engine number in the car.

thanks all.

The conflicting info likely comes from it being a running change.  That is to say, the later 68's had the info stamped in the block and the early ones didnt.  Rather than rehash it here, there are a few threads on the topic already within the forum.  A quick search should turn up a comprehensive guideline for you.
If you do have it though, know that you aren't looking to match the vin but rather the SO number and it will be on the upper rear of the engine.

stripe74au

thanks for that. did i quick search under "68 engine numbers" and quite a few posts came up. will delve further.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be dismissive but there is a bunch of good info on here thats so much more detailed than anything I could add.

It appears that the stampings differed by plant. I have seen a 68 STL VIN of 109XXX stamped on a bell housing indicating an August or September build.

While this topic comes up quite a bit, I don't know that anyone has done any indepth research to determine when VINs start showing up at each plant.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

lol........well im glad its not just me then. felt like a noob trying to locate a number or information pertaining to it. then when you read conflicting info online makes it harder. i understand serialized engine numbers appeared in 68 but not sure when

It is the other way around. You are looking for a partial vin, and not the S.O. number.

So the SO number will only be on the trunk rail and rad cradle for the 68's then?

Body Codes:

Primary location is almost always on the top or backside of the Radiator Support.

Secondary location can be in any one of 4 locations depending upon the year, body and assembly plant. Rear package tray, Convertible cross brace, rear body behind bumper, drivers quarter panel under weatherstrip in trunk or cowl.

Up to 1968 is Year, Plant and SO (Shipping Order) number.
For 1968 it is Plant, Year, 1st digit of V.I.N. and SO number.
For 1969 and newer it is Assembly Plant, Model Year and last 6 digits of V.I.N.

It will be the last six digits on the bottom line of numbers on your fender tag

looking, looking, looking, and still no engine number. spoke to the relevant authority here (in canberra, australia) and explained to them the issue with 68 being the year serialized engine numbers started and plants starting at different times and all that; so they issued me with a police authorised engine number. got the first one in canberra for the year too. got underneath and stamped the block. all good.

anyway she passed inspection and all good to go. got plates on and went cruising.

thanks everyone for your help.
