With the frequent questions about what color to paint a Charger...

We see a lot of us soliciting opinions as to what shade to paint our Chargers.  I wonder how many decide to go with the original color even if they dont like it, how many go with a different color but one for their year and model?  How many stay in the Chrysler family but look at the overall pallette and how many just end up with a color they like and where it came from be damned?

original color means nothing to me. if you like it then go for it. personally unless i had a mustang gt 500 or an original cobra. ill pick a color i like. i repainted my engine bay and after a few tries at color matching my car. i ended up going with 2010 camaro yellow. i cant remember the name off the top of my head but its extremly close. close enough where i would have no problem painting the car that color to match the bay. the paint on the car is at least 15 years old as it sits now so i have no idea what it actually is.

I personally like to stick to factory colours.
If I had a rare model and didn't like it's original colour I think I'd still go factory for the sake of preserving originality.
But since mine are entry level vehicles I chose to change.
Here's my two Chargers.


Was bronze, now HO (dont ask me what the writing on the pillar means, it was there when I bought the car)




My '73 Valiant Charger was a blue car (although not the super blue you see it in here.

what ever the fender tag reads ,
but there have been some real nice colors formulated  ,  working in body & paint  ,  there are thousands & thousands , maybe millions ! of colors  so so many  its amazing , me personally would not no know where to start looking , anything other than a  factory color !   , some of the modern colors look awesome , on the chip / sprayout  , but  not suited to a charger /muscle car  IMO
 

if i had a 68 & was going to choose a color  would be a 68 dodge color & so on  70  car = 70 dodge color etc etc
but if i was doing a 69 charger think i would have a hard time deciding between  Y2 & GY3 cirton yella especially if the charger had no vinyl top   , having said all this , second generations  look good in any fatory color !

I think it depends on two things: Personal taste and what you're working with.  If it's an all-original, numbers-matching car (or close), I'd probably go with the factory color.  If it's a car with no real pedigree to it and you want to do something different, then I say go for it.

For example...I'm going to go the Pro Touring route on my '71 Super Bee.  It's a non-numbers matching car with a 4-speed in it instead of what was likely a column-mounted automatic from the factory.  No huge monetary loss if I do what I want with it, so I'll be painting it in one of PPG's "Vibrance" colors.  On the other hand, my Plum Crazy '70 Challenger was just re-painted in the factory color.

I'm not one to pick a color based on the car as having it as original,...I generally prefer Black on Mopars, or any car for that matter, originality means nothing to me, preferrence is the only choice,..BUT, it also depends on the build, in the case of my 70 Tona clone, my hands were tied by the color choice,...and I hate green, so I get stuck driving a 4 wheeled "Watermellon" down the road....

Wonderin the same thing. 

For me, I searched for quite some time to find a car that had the color I wanted on the tag.  Overall, I like to see cars keep colors that were available that year but in the end it's up to the owner and with the exception of a few choices they look good and are still on the road.

I'm on the fence about this.      If the car is all original, then it's great to keep the original or period correct color.  if there is modifications already taking place, then adding some new paint seems fitting.   we need a re-spray with our car, but like the Sublime and will keep it that color (not many cars can get away with that color  ).

it's all about personal choice, you're the one lookign at it day in and day out!

personally  my car was an entry level with heeps of extras, but it aint a rare hemi or r/t, so it really didnt matter on originallity and its not sitting in a paddock some were rusting, theres enough restored original cars to look at.

I opted for black for mine because I just happen to love black chargers. They look sleek. But that's just my opinion. That's not to say that I don't enjoy seeing other colours out and about.. they all look great.

Here's a picture of our car now.  looks good from 30 feet, but we'll be making her nice up close soon as well as a proper bumblebee strip!

My thoughts exactly.
Ultimately, it is the owner's car to do as he/she chooses, but IMHO if it is a car of high caliber/pedigree than it is wise to leave it original.

Actually, I think you should should do what you want.  I will paint my car an original color, but that's for sentimental reasons. 

Collectors have a different objective and more power to them.
