I don't want to offend anyone but......... column shift in a muscle car...............  :rotz:
There's something wrong with this picture.

I've always felt that way, and somewhere before we talked about it and some people ( most that have a column shift ) are offended.

Great minds think alike  :2thumbs:

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

Chryco Psycho

well it has to have 3 pedals & a 4 spd so column shift is out , might as well throw some buckets seats in, the console breaks or rattles so why bother

70 Charger RT

There is one configuration not mentioned.  My 70 R/T has a column shift with buckets and no buddy seat (or a console).  Just the tranny hump with carpet.  It came from the factory that way.  That's the way I prefer it.

My R/T came with column and buckets as well. Perhaps a better question is..."if you had an original, numbers matching R/T car with a column shift, would you leave it as it came from the factory, or start cutting metal? As for a muscle car or not...certainly a column shift is not the "cool" muscle car option yet I could say the same for a 440 magnum as compared to a six pack, a 8 3/4 versus a Dana 60 or a standard versus a shaker hood.

In the end, muscle is about performance and a column shift does not detract from that..though my air conditioning does  ;D

I just don't think the high back seats look right in a Charger. They look out of place like they are cutting off the cabin prematurely. However, in the Challengers and Cudas  :yesnod: :coolgleamA:

I like the 70 SE interior door panels better than the standard door with the stainless arrowhead looking trim.

From the opposite side...I think '68/'69 seats are grandpa box cutters that have no business in a muscle car. You may as well have a bench seat. There's no comparison when it comes to kick ass seats. The pistol grip is just the icing on the cake. The '71 and up are second. But to each his own I guess.

My 'personal' taste goes to '69 buckets with headrests, and console.  Soon to be console with '67 armrest. (thanks Bob!)  I like the buddy seat and especially the armrest, but like the console more, hence the slight modification might be just what I need.  It column shift doesn't really scream muscle car but honestly, it's not that bad.  It's still a cool car.

I don't like highbacks in a Charger, I don't like the shorter seats without headrests, and I'm not a fan of the '70 doorpanels, the SE panels are pretty nice though.  One add-on, I don't like all these....as much as the '69 interior, but they are still good looking and in a frickin' cool Charger!  Highbacks look great in other mopars though and they are more supportive, that's for sure.

I do like the '70 glovebox door opening downwards though!  :icon_smile_big:

I'm going buckets and no console regardless of shifter. The console is pretty but kinda useless for a daily driver, it uses up a lot of room and collects crap. I'm going for a aftermarket automatic floor shifter even though my car came with a console. I do love the coolness of the first gen. extra long console looks wise!

Troy

My bronze 68 Charger originally came with a column shift but no Buddy seat OR console (just buckets). I have converted it to 4-speed but left it alone otherwise and this is what I prefer. My 68 Charger R/T has a Buddy seat and 4-speed.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

60caddy

I have to say I prefer the armrest, never heard it called a buddy seat till this site.  Family had 2 with armrests, maybe coming from a 60 Caddy with armrest - is why we like them -- boy what a change of vehicles!!  Parents complained of hard ride for 2 wks after trading the Caddy, but then it was all about the cornering of the neat Charger.  They loved it.
