Rewiring an alternator?

The alt on my Charger is not supplying enough juice at idle so I want to upgrade it. I wanna keep the original alternator. Is it possible to rewire and upgrade the alt myself? Has anyone done that? Any pictures of the internals of a 60A Chrysler alt (1970 model) are greatly appreciated!

I know that there are other options but I've already researched them - no need for further input on one-wire, late-model alternators, etc.  ;)

Nevermind, found a kit online that boosts output to 80A or even 105A. Here's a good article on how to do the upgrade: http://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/electrical.html

and the link to the different kits: http://www.alternatorparts.com/chrysler_alt_repair_upgrade_kits.htm

EDIT: seems like the round back kit is currently not available..bummer

Be careful once you start increasing the output of your alternator... see the link below for discussion on alternator output and wiring upgrades that I'm currently in the middle of on my '68 to protect against wiring and bulkhead connector issues.       :icon_smile_wink:

It boosts the total output but does it do it at IDLE?
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

already put in some heavy gauge parallel wiring.

about the idle output - I have no idea but I would say yes, it will increase idle output as alternators with a higher max output tend to have a higher idle output as well.

Sounds like you did your homework...   :2thumbs:

I'm no expert, but the discussions I had with my local auto electric shop suggested the same... if you increase the max output, it also increases output at idle.  Rule of thumb is approx 1/2 the max output will be seen at idle, but there are a few factors that play into that (diameter of pulleys, idle speed, stator, age of alternator etc.)...    :Twocents:
