Cant find park lots of play in shifter

so we just threw in our 383 with a 727 trans and we were unable to find park, i looked underneath the car and the shifter linkage was moving fine and the linkages were tight so we dropped the pan and found that the rooster comb wasnt moving the valve body to get it into drive. How often do rooster combs wear and what are the sysptoms? could this be why it can find park or any other gear now?  :shruggy: its a 70 dodge challenger

could your cable possibly be melted from the heat of the exhaust.  that's of course if you have an aftermarket floor shifter with a longer than normal cable.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

The shift shaft is attached to the roostercomb with swaged splines, it's fairly common for the shift shaft to loosen or completely spin in the roostercomb. I have tried welding (after removing the plastic shoe) but replacement is the best way.
