lawn mower question

i know this is really out there      i swapped a dead 8hp briggs on my little ariens rider for a good running 11hp briggs. i got almost everything done to finish the conversion  except im having a wiring problem. when i hook up the battery the wire going to the coil gets hot. the starter will engage but if i dont start it at all the coil wire keeps getting hotter and hotter.

i disconnected the battery as i didnt wanna burn anything up. any ideas guys? id like to get this all squared away tomorrow if i could thanks, Mike

sounds like maybe the key is turned on or wired wrong?

I havent worked on any new riding mowers  but my older 10hp Briggs rider dont have a "coil" on it. Its got a key for the starter that uses any standard 12volt relay  and it has a magneto for the juice that simply gets grounded to kill the motor.

My close friend is a lawn mower nut.  He has a huge barn just filled with all types of engines, hit and miss, briggs, etc.. He's retired but all he does is repair anything with an engine.  His whole yard is lawn mowers, snow blowers, chain saws, weed whackers, generators, pumps, leave blowers, tractors,etc.... and motors.  A very friendly guy that will be happy to help you over the phone.  I'll PM you his number and give him a call.  HE WILL KNOW WHATS GOING ON.  
P.S  He's a big Mopar man also.

The riding mowers I have  use magnitos for the ignition. The key shorts them out in the off position. They did not have any battery power going to the coil for ignition. They do have a charging coil to keep the battery up.

  And if that is the situation, chances are hooking 12 volts up to it has cooked the coil.
