putting my crank in today, and the gasket kit had a plastic-rubber type rear main seal. i've always remembered the rope style seal. the crank surface is knerled .   i thought the rough surface was to break in the rope seal. how can this new type rear main seal survive on a rough surface? PLEASE HELP!!!!! im on vacation from work, and i can't get the old style seal till the day after tommorrow. have you guys ever had luck with this new seal?       bruce

you have to apply silicone to the seal that touches the block on the retainer.  If you do not then it will leak.  make sure you put it in the way in which the diagram states.

so you dont think the seal lip part will leak when its up against the knurled surface of the crank?

it works fine , I use the rubber seal all the time , offset the parting line for the seal from the parting line at the block a little to help it seal also

yes...   offsetting the seams is a great idea...     my shop's practice if to get the seal seam 90* to the block seam
