I just removed my power steering box in my 71 and replaced it with a new one. my question is my steering column is 3 inches to short! So I thought maybe i got the wrong steering box, but when i put the old one back in to see if that was the case. Now the steering column is still to short for the old one??? anyone know what I did wrong???  :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:
I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, but I'm all out of bubble gum.

Perhaps the collapseable part of the column  got damaged inside. Did it get hammered on or leaned on , shearing the pins inside? Other than that.. maybe the column is not seating  against the firewall somehow?

Good luck and let us know.
Godspeed,
JON

pull the center shaft of the column back down to the steering box.....you probably bumped it up when removing box. It ain't gonna hurt anything when you re-connect it to new box

It seats on the fire wall just fine and the collpasable part is intact

pull the shaft down where the coupler is to the box

I tried that while pushing the steering column from the inside and pulling from the coupler. Its like it just shrunk a couple inches...??? And I'm positive that every part is there

no need to push column from the inside....it's the inner shaft that the coupler is connected to that you have to pull back down....try tapping it with a hammer while pulling it towards the steering box

I'm going to have to try that.
