NEED HELP with Edelbrock carb! UPDATE! Unbelievable !

I just installed a used Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb.  The fuel jets on top (the ones you can see on the top front bores) are not squirting fuel when you pump the throttle.  The idle mixture screw on the drivers side does nothing.  The passenger side seems to work which allows the car to idle.  When you pump the throttle quickly it chokes (boggs) down and cuts off if you don't let it go.  I took out the drivers mixture screw and blew out the hole with some carb cleaner and air.  No change.  I took the top off to check the floats and needles.  They were fine.  The inside looked brand new but I went ahead and cleaned out every port with carb cleaner and air.  Put it back together and it still does the same thing.  I don't think it's a vacuum leak.  Also the squirters on top of the carb do not squirt gas!  Could it be the accelerator pump in the carb?  I am at my wits end!!  HELP!  :brickwall:

1st thing is check/set the float level. :2thumbs:

I would go to the Edelbrock website for tips on how to do that.

Did all that too.  Float levels are dead on recommendations. Needles aren't stuck either.  :scratchchin:

What about the fuel filter or the line have you checked them or were they both good before the swap?

I don't think it would cause the issue you have but could the base be warped?

Diaphragm of acc pump?

Even if my ideas suck maybe they will spark something else that helps you find the problem.

How long was the carb sitting before you used it?  Is the accelerator pump moving when the throttle linkage is moved?

Well after about a week of aggravation I think I finally figured out what's wrong with my carb.  I did everything I could think of to fix it.  Took it apart, cleaned it out with carb cleaner and blasted it with air.  Check for vacuum leaks, checked floats/needles, changed fuel filters but still didn't fix it.  So I decided to try one last thing today...a new accelerator pump.  The old pump looked fine but I figured I would try it any way.  But this time when I took off the top of the carb I noticed the driver's side reservoir was completely dry while the passenger's side was full of gas.  Obviously the driver's side was not getting gas.  Which explains why the idle mixture screw on that side was not working.  So I began to hunt around to see where the driver's side should be getting fuel.  It looks to me that fuel is SUPPOSED to travel in from the left side over across the top of the carb to the driver's side filling up the reservoirs on both sides unit the floats cut off the flow of gas.  There's just one problem...it is totally blocked off!  It appears that the passage from the passengers side to the driver's side was never drilled out.  This had to be done (or actually not done) at the Edelbrock factory.  Check out the pics below to get the idea.  I can't believe this left Edelbrock like this.  Luckily the guy I bought the carb from has been great and has already sent out a replacement.   But dang this has been a pain!

Wow!  Just wow!  Very unlike Edelbrock but still.  I trust you'll be sending a complaint to them.  Whether you bought the carb new or not isn't the point in this case.

terrible one

:eek2: I take it you didn't get to keep the carb? It's an unfortunate situation but it would still be a neat souvenir to have.

You better believe they are going to get a complaint.  There's no excuse for this.  Maybe they'll send me a new carb any way.  You never know...but I doubt it.  I think next time it's a Holley for me!

A few years back I got an Eddy carb new & it was missing the fuel bowl wall inside the casting , obviously it never worked right & we could not get any warranty on it , I have not bought from Eddy since , just another Chinese company with poor customer service

bluegrasscharger

I sent a complaint email to Edelbrock back when I first posted this topic.  As of today I have not had a response from them.

Junk the eddy and grab a proform or a holley, you wont be disappointed.

If you bought it used why should edelbrock replace it? I would give it back to whomever you got it from and get your money back.

bluegrasscharger

It shouldn't matter if I am the original owner or not, it's just plain unacceptable that Edelbrock let this leave their factory like this.  The guy I got it from was great about it and replaced it quickly.  I did not ask Edelbrock to replace it but it would have been nice to have some kind of a response or apology from them.  As far as Edelbrock knows I am the original owner because I didn't tell them I bought it used.  Obviously they don't give a crap about their customers or quality control.

greenpigs

This is an easy fix.

Just buy from someone else, like Quick Fuel next time you need carb stuff.

This is sloppy quality control & applies to everything they make, how can they say otherwise?

Different shop will not cut it either as they should have a coporate quality plan.

Edelbrock carbs are essentially rebranded 'Weber' carbs. All Weber carbs are made in Spain and have been for thirty years, but Edelbrock carbs bear 'Made in USA' stickers. Don't think the Chinese have ever had anything to do with them. :scratchchin: Who knows...

Either way, that undrilled drilling is some pretty crappy quality control!

Have you checked the float level and fuel pressure yet like posted above?

This is a fluke part he got so the odds of having the same problem are slim, BUT if some tooling broke and they forgot to check the parts ran there could be a couple more floating around

Your car will run better and have more power with a holley. I'd ditch the edelslop carburetors. I'd run thier manifolds, and my stroker has thier performer rpm cylinder heads on it. but I wouldnt run thier cams, carbs for sure.
