A/C option code

Hi,

I was looking at pictures of a Charger R/T -68 today. It was stated as an A/C car which I think it is. It has the blower motor located at the outside of the firewall, and all hose connections typical for an A/C car are there, and of course the compressor. So it looks right. It has the A/C button on the fan/heater console also. It looks factory to me.

But. The fender tag states S7, I would expect S1. However, on the fender tag is also A1 which indicates 26 inch rad opening. What do you guys think about this? Would the A1 indicate it is a factory A/C car even if it is stated S7 on the heater option? I think I have read all threads about A/C options, but I couldn't sort this out myself.

Thanks!

I use this site to decode 68 tags, which you may already know about:
http://www.jimshine.com/tag%20info/68tagdecode.htm

According to above the only code on the tag that indicates AC is S1.

S7 doesn't sound like a valid code to me. As far as I know S1 is the only designation for a 68 Charger with AC. You can have a 26" rad (A1) even if you don't have AC.

If you have a pic of the fender tag to share that makes this real easy.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I've seen this decoder, and I also have Galen's books to support these kinds of investigations. Thing is, from the pictures of the car it really looks like a factory A/C installation, but again I agree with you. I would expect S1 for a true A/C car. S7 indicates a standard heater.

Question: Was A1 possible to order without A/C and for non-manual cars? For what purpose would you then need 26 inch rad opening? Just curious.

Here's the picture of the fender tag.

Interesting. Does the car have a Tic Toc Tach? If it does then it was probably a stamping error as I have seen quite a few 68s with R1, S1, T7.

Others may be able to chime in but stamping errors are not unheard of. Does the car have a build sheet? That would tell us for sure. The order # on the build sheet would need to match the 6 digit number in the lower right hand corner.

Yes, it has Tic Toc Tach, which is said to be original. So moving the numbers "one position to the right" would mean R1, S1 (A/C), T7 (tac) which adds up perfectly with the things actually on the car. For what the guy who has the car says it has a AM radio, original, which could be the R1.

However, as the fender tag is stamped it says Q1, R1, S7. Now, if we would **assume** the tag is correctly stamped, what would Q1 mean? I haven't figured it out. Was it possible at all to order Q1 and R1? Both indicate radio options. It does not make sense to me, which also supports the theory of stamping error.

Guess the conclusion is that this is probably a stamping error on the fender tag. All other options adds up, as well as the body code with the rad support and trunk lip. The reason for my questions are that I'm looking to buy this car, and I'm really into the codes and numbers.

There are no options for Q1. The only reasonable explanation is a stamping error. At least in my opinion anyhow.  :Twocents:

May also want to check for the VIN on the block and transmission. See the following links for more info on finding those numbers:
